Athletics has always had its place within higher education and is oftentimes referred to as the “front porch” of the institution. With high visibility, vast media coverage, community support/engagement, and as an avenue for increased enrollment, collegiate athletics serves various purposes across campuses nationwide. While most of what college sports has to offer is inherently meaningful, recent media attention surrounding allegations of mistreatment by coaches has sparked debates about the line between motivation/coaching and mistreatment.
The presenters encountered such allegations and through their investigations have discovered ways to make critical distinctions in their analysis and to navigate tough situations in manners serving both student-athletes and coaches.
This educational session is designed to arm decision-makers with a systematic approach to unpack the issues appropriately, tips for communicating clearly throughout the process, and a guideline for arriving at an organized response that is sound in its justification and protects all involved.
Topics to be covered:
- Understand the implications (legal, staffing, cultural) of bullying allegations in athletics
- Why are athletics specially situated for these claims?
- How do you determine whether there is an obligation to respond?
- How to manage this contentious issue outside a response obligation; a holistic response from our own experience
